OLD COURSE (6271 yards, par 72)

The Old Course St Andrews is surely the mecca of the golfing world. Golf has been played here for over six centuries. The Old Course has evolved over time and was not designed by any one architect.. The course is known for its physical features including 112 bunkers, including 'Hell' on the long 14th, 'Strath' on the short 11th and the Road Bunker at what is probably the most famous golf hole in the world, the 17th or Road Hole (so called because a road - which is in play - runs hard against the back edge of the green). Another peculiar feature of the Old Course is the double greens where the outward and inward holes are cut on the same putting surface. These greens are large, not surprisingly, and golfers can be faced with putts of almost 100 yards.

OLD COURSE BALLOT
The Old Course is immensely popular, sustaining over 40,000 rounds a year. As a result of this high demand, special conditions apply to bookings. There is a handicap requirement of 24 for men and 36 for ladies. Please bring a valid certificate or card. The Old Course is closed Sundays.

Around 50 per cent of all starting times over the year are put into the daily ballot (lottery) which is drawn every day for next day's play except Sunday - the Saturday draw is for Monday play.

Success in the ballot is not guaranteed and chances vary according to the time of year, how busy the course is and the weather. A minimum two golfers can enter either telephone or apply in person before 2pm on the day before play by calling 01334 466666.

SINGLE GOLFERS
The most common way for a single to get on the Old Course is by going to the starter as early as possible in the morning. The starter will try to join the golfer with the first available 2 or 3 ball.

24 HOUR BOOKING
24 hour ahead booking is available on The Jubilee, Eden and Strathtyrum Courses. Telephone 01334 466666. The New Course is on arrival at the starter on a first come first served basis.
